I’m Excited…

I’m excited to be alive and a musician in 2009.  

I’m excited because I feel like this is the best time ever to be an artist…of any kind really. Never before has there been more opportunity to reach people than right now…yes, in 2009, even when the world is in a not so good place.  

I’m excited because at my fingertips I can connect with a lover of spiritual music in tahiti, or a fellow Phish-phan in massachussettes…or a PR expert in Italy, or Brooklyn…without ever having met them, seen them, or talked to them before. 

I’m excited because when I write a song now…I don’t have to wait until I get it recorded professionally to be able to play it for people…or even wait until I have burned and pressed a CD in the mail so that I can send it to my friends…  I’m excited because my friend Charlie asked me if he could hear a new song I was working on today, and all I had to do was attach it to an email and send it to him.  And I’m excited because he liked it too! 

I’m excited that the power to be successful is in my hands first and foremost and that the power for anybody to be successful is in the hands of the artist first and foremost.  

I’m excited because the money is in the “long tail” these days.  That artists can be successful by knowing their super specific niche rather than having to try to appeal to the the entirety of the masses in hopes of making it.  

I’m excited because making it is different today than 10 years ago…and everyday I can do something to help me feel like I’ve “made it” more and more.  Though there is the still grandeous “make it” that still exists and most hope to achieve (myself included)…making it is a much broader term, and much more possible.  Making it is as much a means as it is still an end in this day and this age.

I’m excited because I love writing songs more now than I ever have.  Possibly because I know that others will be able to share in my experience with far more ease…with the click of a button…with the send of a text…with the what are you doing of tweets…  And possibly because there is a freedom to being an artist now that didn’t exist before.  Either way, I’m very excited.  

I’m excited these days…

I’m so happy to be a musician.
