Hi,

Thanks for your comment. I'm glad the post sparked your interest and made you reflect as you say. I wish I could have had more time to explore the pass as I just moved back to NYC a couple days ago. Unfortunately, it opened a couple days before my move and I was planning on driving it the day I left but it was raining in Aspen which made me wonder about how safe the pass would be. indeep the scariest drive I've ever take is on that narrow road through the mountains. Next time I am in aspen I will definitely drive down the pass and check out the other side of the continental divide as I only drove up to the top and then turned around. It feels like a different world up there. WAY above the treeline. Amazing.

Very perceptive piece, thanks for writing it. Especially like the link to Independence, CO, as I lived over in Basalt - which as you know is just North of Aspen - a few years back. We took the pass regularly in the summer months as a shorter route to Denver, but rarely did we stop to poke around the higher towns. If I return, which I hope to do in the not-too-distant future, then I'll definitely check it out in more depth.

The other place a little further out of the Pass road, Leadville, always fascinated me too. With that Western saloon town feel, it felt like a brief step back in time before reaching the Interstate and speeding back to "reality". As your piece touches upon, perhaps that reality needs to be checked every now and then to make sure the focus is on the right things and operating for the right motivations.

Gotta love blogs that make one reflect, so thanks again!
